The engineer's guide to saying no

On scope, priorities, and why the best technical decisions are often refusals.

Senior engineers write code. Staff engineers write documents. Principal engineers say no.

The most important skill for a senior technical leader is the ability to decline work that does not align with the strategic goals or technical vision.

Why we say yes

We say yes because we want to be helpful. We say yes because we think we can do it all. We say yes because we are afraid of conflict.

The cost of yes

Every feature you add is a liability. It has to be maintained, tested, and documented. It adds complexity to the codebase and cognitive load to the team.

How to say no

Don't just say "no." Say "not now," or "we can do this, but it will cost X."

"Strategy is deciding what not to do." — Michael Porter

Focus on the high-impact work. Let the rest go.
